During one of our trips between Monterey and Pasadena in the fall of 2000
we stopped at Gaviota State Beach for a stroll and picnic lunch Gaviota
State Beach is on the California coast south of Santa Maria and west of
Santa Barbara. Highway 101 parallels the shoreline atop the bluffs from
here to Santa Barbara in the distance. In this view we see the railroad
trestle across Gaviota canyon and the cliffs to the east of the park.
The facilities in the park have recently been refurbished. Camping and
picnicking are available. View
as a panorama (212K).
Pelicans on the wing oil rig on the horizon.
Cliffs to the west on the pier.
On the right is a close up of
the sedimentary layers
imbedded in the cliffs.
