Who IS Ranger BoB?
Ranger
Bob is NOT a park ranger, forest ranger, or Army Ranger!
Ranger BoB is a nick name I picked up long ago. The title was
awarded on a bright sunny day after I lead a group of friends on a walk
(hike) down Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek State Park,CA (Click on the doll
for a recent picture of Fern Canyon). This beautiful walk is, in my estimation,
about 3 miles in length and mostly down hill. Some claim I said it would
only take 30 minutes. The trail meanders through ancient redwoods, down
into a narrow canyon whose vertical walls are carpeted with ferns and
then out on to Gold Beach. While my friends were reasonable fit, Bill
was carrying shrapnel in his leg from WWII and Martha and Ruthie both
had knees that had previously been overhauled. The uneven terrain and
their perception of the length of the walk has made for lively discussion
and numerous myths over the years.
Camping, hiking, cycling, sailing, river rafting and other out door activities
have played a prominent role in family activities over the years. As we
involved our friends in these activities the use of the nick name increased.
Eldest son Eric created the doll in the upper right of this page not
long after the "great walk." On one of those birthdays that
ends in zero, my good friend Kirby (barber without peer, real estate mogul,
fellow C-15 sailor, etc. ) created and awarded me the Ranger BoB star
shaped badge. These have been lasting reminders of the many fun experiences
shared with family and friends. And more on the way!
